It's been eons since I wore NEON (hello 1984!). But after catching a rerun of

3 Ways to Cover those Grays!

So this isn't a craft project exactly, but it is a little like painting! I come from a long line of people with gray hair... or as I like to call them "silver foxes." My Aunt Mary went gray in her 20's and my Dad was totally silver by age 30. Let's just say I've been keeping the "gray at bay" for awhile now.

Standard root coverage practice means a visit to the hair salon every 4-6 weeks... BUT it's not always feasible or affordable to get the gray professionally covered. Here are a few ideas that work for me:

1. Mascara: When your mascara reaches retirement, get a little more out of it by using it to cover that  gray grow out. I usually use Maybelline Great Lash but of course-- any kind of mascara will do. Even though my mascara is black and my hair is dark brown, it's not noticable. Works great in a pinch.

2. Identity Spray Pigment: This new product-- Identity Spray Pigment, provides temporary spot color in a shade close to your own. You just use it like hairspray and it works like a charm. It easily washes out the next time you take a shower. There are lots of colors to choose from.

3. Clairol "Nice n' Easy" Root Touch Up: The Clairol "Nice n' Easy" Root Touch Up is a more "permanent" solution. According to the product website, it lasts 3 weeks. The kit comes with a easy-to-use brush for getting those roots and the box guarantees that it flawless matches ANY brand, even salon color. You can find this product at the drugstore and it's pretty affordable.

Of course, you could also scrap the coverage plan and embrace it-- like gorgeous silver-stranded model Cindy Joseph who didn't start posing for the camera until she was 40!

Butterfly Specimen Lamp Revamp

Hey There! Do you have any old lamps sitting around... just waiting for a makeover? I had one poor forlorn lamp from COLLEGE. Let's just say that was a long time ago. Like (gulp) 20 years. I think I bought it during my Laura Ashley phase. The original shade had sort of a english country pattern. But of course I couldn't afford real Laura Ashley products so it's probably from TJ Maxx. The base has been languishing in corners for years and had a lot of wear and tear. TIME FOR A LAMP REVAMP!

Supplies: Old lamp base, KRYLON Indoor/Outdoor spray paint in Blue Ocean Breeze, new burlap shade from Target, vintage butterfly clip art from The Cottage Market, straight pins and wire cutters. 

The KRYLON paint was great for this job. You do light coats of paint and they dry fast... it says 10 minutes on the can and I think that's right.

I taped the heck out of the light fixture part and the cord so I wouldn't accidentally paint them. It's always a problem for me!  

Let the lamp dry. Using jewelry wire cutters, cut the straight pins in half.  

Then carefully print and cut the butterflies out. I was sort of taken with how vibrant the colors are. Thank you so much, sweet Andrea. If you don't know Andrea from The Cottage Market yet... go visit her. She is one of the GEMS of the blogging world. Kind, encouraging and very generous!

The butterflies are different sizes...

So just sort of stick them where you like them with the straight pins.

That's all there is to it. You can gently bend the wings up to give them dimension.

5 Ways to Save Money at Value Village

Hi There! I hope you are having a good Memorial Day Weekend. I'm getting caught up on some creative projects. I don't know about you but I'm always trying to keep my crafting habit and vintage addictions under control by NOT spending a lot.

ANYWAY... One of my favorite places to score both vintage items and stuff to upcycle/repurpose is Value Village. I think it's called Savers in other places in the US. It's also called Savers in Canada, although in Montreal, it's Village des Valeurs. You can also find Savers in Australia.

Whatever it's called... I've never met a Value Village I didn't like! I was just there a couple days ago buying men's neckties for a project. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt... it's like a thrift store but extremely organized, with excellent lighting and bathrooms! Plus, you never know what you'll find... like a gorgeous Bergdorf Goodman tie for $2.99.

I also frequently hit Value Village to grab tea cups and saucers for the mismatched tea cup collection Mia and I have going. I am one of those people who can't bear breaking up a set so those single pieces are perfect.

One holiday season when my son was into Pokemon (and you Pokemon parents know those cards can be PRICEY)... I found an entire binder jam-packed with Pokemon cards for $2.99. There were literally hundreds of cards! My son was over the moon about his gift and it cost me just a few bucks.

Even though everything at Value Village is already pretty affordable... you can save EVEN MORE money there with a little planning.

Here are my tips on saving money at Value Village:

1)Sign up for the Super Savers Club Card. Visit the page for the Super Savers Club Card, enter your info online and you get a confirmation page that you can bring into any Value Village to get your "Super Savers" card and a 25% off discount coupon! Not only will you score that first coupon, you'll get info on special events, members-only coupons, birthday offers and more.

2)Donate. When you donate items to Value Village, it translates into revenue for their 140 nonprofit partners across the US, Canada, and Australia. Plus there's something in it for you-- they'll give you a coupon (usually $3 off your purchase of $10 or more) and a donation form to fill out for your taxes. So you can feel good 3x for each donation!

3)Shop the Sales. Like other stores, Value Village has major sales, usually timed around holidays. For example, for Memorial Day, May 28th, in the U.S., there is a huge 50% off sale from 9 am - 9 pm. 

4)Watch the Tags. Speaking of sales... Value Value tags reflect when an item came in. Each week, a different color tag is on sale. In my local store, I think it's Thursdays. Usually the store manager will announce over the loudspeaker what color tag is on sale-- but you can certainly ask an employee also.

5)Know Your Discounts. For example, senior citizens and military personnel are eligible for additional discounts.

Barb's Lovely Lemon Bars

Hello There! This recipe for Lemon Bars comes via my friend Barb. Here's a little bit about her. Barb is a grandma to two darling little girls who look like mini versions of Barb and her daughter (their Mom). She has a great sense of humor and hearty laugh. When Barb identifies a problem-- she jumps in and gets results (in a very nice way). I really admire her grit and her poise.

After confiding in Barb about my Lemon Square issues, she shared this recipe with me. See what I mean? The woman gets things done! I have not given up on my Grandma Millicent's Lemon Squares. In fact, a very kind and knowledgeable friend named Diane is emailing me through it. But till I get it right... here's a great recipe from Barb!

Lemon Squares

1 cup flour

1/4 cup sugar

1 cube butter

Mix together and press into the bottom of a 9 x 13' pan. Bake in 325 degree oven for 15 minutes.

Mix Together:

3 beaten eggs

1-1/2 cups sugar

3 tbsps. flour

3/4 tsp. Baking Powder

Juice and grated rind of 1-1/2 lemons

Pour onto baked crust and bake 25 minutes at 325 degrees. When cool,  sprinkle with powedered sugar.
