Lots of Fuss about Google+

Hi Friends!

As many of you know, we non-"Blogger" bloggers (YoT is on Typepad) will be losing Google Friend Connect on March 1st. I am strangely sad... I feel happy when I see all those lovely friendly faces smiling at me from my little GFC box. But onward and upward-- there's no point in crying over spilled milk or in this case-- over free widgets that have come to mean so much.

At any rate, Google is encouraging people to go to Google+ to connect with friends. In case you are new to Google+ (I am too) and you want to stay connected, you can find me here, and I PINKY PROMISE I will joyfully follow you back.

Life IS a Picnik

Also worth noting-- Picnik, that wonderful user-friendly photo editing site which was puchased by Google some time ago-- is becoming part of Google+. More info here. I think that's extra incentive to go Google+. AND in the meantime, they are giving everyone a PREMIUM membership FOR FREE... so check it out! It's a $25 value!

What if I'm not ready or interested in Google+?

Some people don't want to take on another social media tool-- and I totally understand that. You can still subscribe to your favorite blogs, including  *hopefully* YoT (upper left hand corner) though Feedburner or in a Reader.

Bev from Flamingo Toes has written a great post on how this, titled "The Mystery of RSS Feeds".

Vintage YOT: Valentine Chandelier

Here's a fun way to bring Valentine's Day to your lighting fixtures! 

 Supplies:  White branches (available at craft stores or spray paint some found branches), an upcycled paperback, vintage book, or scrapbook paper. A heart paper punch, florist's wire, plastic chandelier pendants, Elmer's Glue or Modge Podge and scissors. Optional: Seam binding or ribbon.

Punch out hearts. I punched out sixty heart to make the front and back of thirty. If your book is Valentine or romance related, it's easy to center your punch to get certain words or phrases on the heart.

 Cut wire and attach branches to a lighting fixture.

Use the white glue or Modge Podge to coat one side of a heart.  

Line an other heart on top and glue to branch.  

Continue all over branches until you are satisfied.

 

String the wire through the plastic chandelier pendants

Add them where you like.

 
 Balance hearts and pendants.

If you want a little something extra, you can add seam binding or ribbon.

Tie gentle bows where you'd like to see a pop of color.

Voila!

Vintage YOT: Jam Heart Cookies

I {heart} peanut butter and jelly... especially in cookie form.

Ingredients: 

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar

1 cup creamy peanut butter

1 large egg

1/3 cup raspberry jam, stirred to loosen

Directions

Whisk together flour, baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

Beat butter and sugars with a mixer on medium speed until pale and fluffy. Beat in peanut butter, then egg. Reduce speed to low, and beat in flour mixture until dough forms. 

If dough is sticky, refrigerate for 5 to 10 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough into 1 1/2-inch balls (about 2 tablespoons each).

Arrange on parchment-lined (or tin foil lined) baking sheets, spacing 1 1/2 inches apart. Press into 1 3/4-inch rounds.

 

Press hearts into centers using your fingertips. Refrigerate for 20 minutes. Bake for 12 minutes.

 Remove from oven, and reshape hearts using your fingertips or the handle of a wooden spoon.

Fill indentation of each with a generous 1/2 teaspoon jam to form a heart. Bake until cookies are firm, 6 to 7 minutes more.
